Quick Answer

How old does my child need to be to get into kindergarten in public school?

Your child must be 5 years old to enter kindergarten in Hawai`i.

You will need to register your child with the Hawai`i Department of Education (DOE) to attend school. There are two options until the 2013-2014 school year:

  • If your child turns 5 on or before August 1, you can enroll your child in kindergarten
  • If your child turns 5 on or after August 2, but before December 31, you can enroll your child in junior kindergarten

What You Need to Know

Starting with the 2014-2015 school year, there will be no Junior Kindergarten. Also, the cut-off date for entering kindergarten will switch from August 1 to July 31.

For more information, see the kindergarten section of the DOE website.
