Quick Answer

How do I register a brand new motor vehicle?

If you purchased the vehicle from an Oahu dealer:

The dealer will probably have it registered and licensed for you. So you won’t need to do anything further.

If you purchased the vehicle elsewhere, or are completing registration on your own:

  • Fill out the Application for Registration (Form CS-L MVR 1)
  • Obtain a Hawai`i Vehicle Inspection Certificate
  • Obtain proof of insurance
  • Look up your registration fee online
  • Submit the forms, proof of insurance, and payment by mail to the Registration Section or submit them in person to any Satellite City Hall

What You Need to Know

The Application for Registration form should be signed by you, as well as by the registered owner(s), and the dealer.

To obtain a Hawai`i Vehicle Inspection Certificate, you’ll need to show proof of valid Hawai`i No-fault Insurance.

Military service members stationed in Hawai`i who are non-residents of Hawai`i must also submit the Non-Resident Certificate (Form CS-L MVR 50). Obtain the form from your military personnel office or your military unit.

Submit your registration materials by mail to:

Registration Section
P.O. Box 30330
Honolulu, HI 96813

Or submit your registration materials in person at any Satellite City Hall.
