Quick Answer

How do I qualify for Section 8 housing?

To qualify for Section 8 low-rent housing, you must meet all 7 eligibility requirements:

  • Meet current income limits
  • Fall within the definition of a family
  • Provide a Social Security Number (SSN) or show that an SSN application has been submitted
  • Show US citizenship or eligible immigrant status
  • Not be a registered sex offender
  • Never have been convicted of producing methamphetamines
  • Not have a violence or drug-related criminal conviction within the past 3 years

What You Need to Know

You can contact the Department of Community Services to confirm eligibility or to begin the application process. If you’re eligible, you will receive a voucher that entitles you to search for a rental unit.

The City will pay part of the rent to the owner. Your share of the rent is determined by the City’s annual income eligibility check.

Note:

  • Applications are not accepted at all times. Look in the newspaper or on the Section 8 website to see if applications are being accepted.
  • There is a long waiting list of qualified applicants.
